Hamburger Hochbahn wants to deploy 50 hydrogen fuel cell buses on Hamburg roads over the next four years (2021-2025).
The German public transport operator has this week launched a tender for the delivery of up to 50 buses, covering four lots for different vehicle types.
Hamburger Hochbahn said it wants to buy “pure fuel cell” buses but is also interested in buses in which the fuel cell serves a range extender.
Both solo and articulated buses will be tendered for both technical solutions, with a minimum range of 300km for solo buses and 230km for articulated buses.
In a statement, Hamburger Hochbahn said the tender was preceded by a Europe-wide process in which manufacturers could qualify to participate. Several providers have now successfully achieved this.
Fuel cell technology has been an integral part of the Hochbahn vehicle strategy for years as the public transport operator plans to retire its diesel buses by the end of this decade, and converts its fleet to fuel cell.
